Fields of the River joins the association of municipalities of the old Marquesado De Los Vélez (17/03/2017)

This morning the assembly of the association has ratified the agreement by which the municipality of Campos del Río joins a total of 16 municipalities in the provinces of Murcia and Almeria

17 municipalities of Almería and Murcia that belonged to the old Marquesado de Los Vélez, created in October of 2014 an association to foment joint initiatives of tourism and sustainable development based on the historical and cultural ties as well as in the artistic and ethnographic patrimony that conserves of that one period.

The Association of Municipalities of the Old Marquis of Los Vélez was constituted with the signatures of the representatives of the localities of Albanchez, Albox, Albudeite, Alhama de Murcia, Cantoria, Chirivel, Cuevas del Almanzora, Librilla, María, Mazarrón, Molina de Segura, Mula, Oria, Taberno, Vélez-Blanco and Vélez-Rubio, now with the adhesion of Campos del Río.

These towns, along with Benitagla, Arboleas, Campos del Río, Zurgena and Partaloa, formed part of the Marquesado de Los Vélez, from its foundation in 1.507 until the extinction of the señoríos in 1837.

At present, the 21 municipalities of the former Marquesado cover an area of ​​almost 3,700 square kilometers and have a population of more than 200,000 inhabitants.

The association aims to promote cooperation between entities and institutions involved in the conservation, research and promotion of the historical, artistic and ethnographic heritage of the former Marquesado de Los Vélez;

Organize joint actions with other public and private organizations in matters of local tourist promotion;

Design cultural itineraries and promote their homologation;

And encourage citizen participation in the conservation and dissemination of the heritage of municipalities.

Perez Cerón said that "they seek to convert the historical and ethnographic heritage into an asset that generates employment and wealth through collaboration between municipalities and with the involvement of administrations, companies, groups and citizens, in general. History of the Marquesado de Los Vélez

In 1507 was officially created the Marquesado de Los Vélez, one of the most extensive manors in the northern area of ​​the Kingdom of Granada.

The Fajardo, originally from Lugo, enlisted in the Castilian troops that conquered the Kingdom of Murcia, where they were granted the title of Adelantado of that Kingdom by Enrique II.

The first Marquis of Los Vélez, Pedro Fajardo and Chacón, had the castles of Vélez-Blanco, Cuevas del Almanzora and Mula built.
